Studies have shown financial planning benefits people both financially and emotionally. Financial Planning Standards Council (FPSC) developed a comprehensive study to evaluate Canadians’ financial planning activities and to measure the impact of financial planning or lack thereof on peoples' lives. While the study clearly establishes the benefits of planning, what may be surprising is just how profound these results are and the relationship between financial planning and emotional well-being of Canadians, regardless of their age or net worth. Today, fewer than one of five Canadians engage in comprehensive financial planning.

  • Total debt per household is now equal to 148 per cent of disposable income and outpacing our American neighbors (Globe and Mail, Dec 13, 2010).
  • Fewer than half of Canadians (46%) say they have a financial advisor (CSA investor index study, 2009).

In Canada, there is a scarcity of independent, unbiased research on many of the strategies that financial planners routinely employ to help their clients. The FPSC Foundation is dedicated to addressing this issue, while keeping our goal of advancing the financial betterment of Canadians at the forefront of our work.

We can do it!

Clearly, poor financial planning or lack of planning affects more than just the bottom line. With the unprecedented number of financial challenges facing Canadians today, there has never been a better time to help the FPSC Foundation achieve its mission of helping Canadians make better financial planning decisions, for a prosperous Canada.
